Honey-Can-Do BRD-01435 Collapsible Tabletop Ironing Board Review: Best Ironing Board For College

Once upon a time I moved into a new house that had a wall-mounted ironing board installed.  I had never used a wall mounted ironing board before, so I was excited to give it a shot.

After a couple of months I found that ironing clothes wasn’t as fun as it used to be, and I was starting to think of it as a chore instead of an opportunity to take care of my clothes.

Nothing against wall-mounted ironing boards, but I eventually realized my problem:  I had inherited someone else’s ironing habits.  This ironing board was the wrong height for me, rickety to unfold, and cumbersome to use.  Why was I making it so hard on myself?

I finally decided I had to get a new ironing board, however I didn’t want to be the weird guy with all the ironing boards everywhere (I no longer have this concern), so I needed something that could be stashed out of sight.

A tabletop ironing board was the answer, something that could be whipped out when I need it and out of sight when I don’t.

The Honey-Can-Do BRD-01435 is a perennial best selling tabletop ironing board that constantly generates positive reviews with its compact yet powerful design.  Take a closer look at this unit with our Honey-Can-DO BRD-01435 review.

Large Ironing Surface In A Compact Board

When you think of a compact ironing board, probably another word that comes to mind is “small”.  Tabletop ironing boards can be known to have small ironing surfaces, making it more difficult to lay out your clothing item as well as navigate the steam iron around.

What sets the Honey-Can-Do BRD-01435 apart is that, despite its compact size, the ironing surface is 32 inches long, giving you extra inches that make this a worthwhile replacement to a full size board at half the length.

When it’s folded up, this ironing board can be slimmer than others, due to the design of its horizontal legs.

Take It Anywhere

The big deal you get with the Honey-Can-Do is portability.  The horizontal legs are very helpful in turning any surface into an ironing surface.  Whether it’s putting it on a kitchen counter or setting it up on your bed, it can instantly create space where you can tackle wrinkles.  Sure, many other tabletop irons can also be used on the bed, but the horizontal legs add an additional element on stability, so you’re not fighting with the surface while you fight the wrinkles.

Pros

The Honey-Can-Do is relatively unmatched mainly due to two things:  it’s compactness, and its price. This is easily the best tabletop ironing board around that costs under $50, and that’s one of the reasons it has continued to impress over the years.

It comes with a retractable metal iron rest to lay your iron on while you’re preparing your next garment, keeping the heat generated and steam ready so you don’t have to power down your iron.

The foldable legs allow you to stash this ironing board out of sight when you’re finished with it.  It can easily slip between a dresser and a wall, or stashed away behind a box in a closet, or hang behind a laundry room door.  All folded up, the ironing board measures 33.5 inches long, 12.5 inches wide, and 2 ¼ inches high.

Cons

The board is made from a fiberboard material that doesn’t allow steam to pass through the garments as easily as a metal mesh ironing board would.  If you’re a real stickler for the quality of the garment and the amount of steam/pressure you are using while you iron and want optimal results, this tabletop ironing board is probably not the best bet, specifically because of the fiberboard interior.

Additionally, the fiberboard can start to flake off the longer you own and use it.

The cover is not easily removable and thus not washable.  If you use a lot of starch on your shirts, this may cause problems for you.

Unfortunately at such a price point, you increase the chance of low quality parts.  For example, the thin cover may wear out pretty quickly if you are used to ironing with a high heat setting with a powerful steam iron like the Rowenta DW5080.

What Customer Reviews Say

You can tell this item is popular by the sheer quantity of online reviews.  With over a thousand reviews on Amazon alone, you’ll currently find that around 68% are 5-star reviews.

Not only that, but the percent of 1-star reviews is incredibly low, currently about 4%.

The online reviewers praise the ease of use and the portability of this unit.  It helps that many of these people have kept their expectations low, which allowed the ironing board to deliver.

The few negative reviews mention some problems with the component parts causing the legs and iron rest to wobble (see my earlier point about low quality parts).

There’s also a trend of people reporting a strange midew odor with the ironing board upon delivery.  No one currently has a comment to explain the origin of the odor, however the ironing board is easy enough to return for a different unit yours arrives like those in the reviews.

Conclusion

It’s a little too small to be able to add this as your main laundry ironing board if you’ve got the space and you’re doing laundry for a whole family or otherwise have large loads to go through with dress shirts or complex quilting projects.

However, if you want the ability to iron a couple of shirts while watching TV on the couch on sitting on your bed, this may be just what you need.

If space is truly at a premium for you and you don’t have a whole lot of available options, then this is definitely the route to take.  The Honey-Can-Do does the job and does it well, and stays out of sight until you need it.
